Sea Life in Manuel Antonio, Quepos - Costa Rica
Even though we cannot guarantee that you will be able to watch all of these species, here are some of the beautiful animals that live on our waters and that you have to look for while on or tours:
Leatherback Sea Turtle
These are the oldest living reptiles in the world. They are extremely endangered and the number of turtles nesting in Costa Rica is falling. There are many programs in the country to help protect the turtle eggs to ensure that we can continue to enjoy this beautiful animal.
Spinner Dolphins
Long snouted spinner dophins Costa Rican variety, long slender beak, erect dorsal fin and spinning leaps. They can leap up to 9 feet in the air. And can spin as many as 7 times in a single leap
Manta Rays
Some of them
are 6 meters wide. These are quite a sight. At first they look like a big shadow in the ocean, but upon closer inspection you can see this enourmous and beautiful animal.
Killer Whale
This is the largest member of the dolphin family, although normally we don’t think of them as dolphins. They can reach up to 30 feet in length. These whales don’t migrate like other whales do, but they do move according to where there is food. Normally they live in groups of 5 to 70 animals. Killer whales have a variety of behavior. There are the transient killer whales who travel long distances in small groups to feed on other mammals and there are also resident Killer Whales who are very local in the ocean and eat mostly fish.
Bottlenose Dolphins
are a common sight along the coastline here in Costa Rica. They can reach lengths of up to 12 feet in length. They are gray on the back and white on the belly. This is a type of camoflauge for them in the water from their prey. As they age they tend to get spots along their sides and bellies. These animals are very intelligent, with a great hearing and eyesight, athough they can not smell very well.
Dolphins can not breath underwater. They breath through their blowhole at the surface and then hold their breath wihle underwater. They are very social animals living in groups, and do everything together.
You can also see spotted dolphins, pilot whales, pseudo orcas (false killer whales), the rough tooth and the risso dolphins
Humpback Whales
These are beautiful whales that migrate from Alaska down here to Costa Rica. They are an impressive site when they breach and slap the water with their fins. They are enormous animals weighing up to 50 tons and reaching lengths of 52 feet. This species is very endangered with only about 10% of their original population remaining.
